From websites to AI agents — and why your business needs to be ready

The way people find businesses online is changing faster than at any point in the last 25 years. Google’s own chief executive has described 2027 as “the year of the agents” — and the numbers already back it up: well over half of Google searches now end with no click at all. People type a question, read the answer AI gives them right there, and never visit a website.

If your business depends on being found online, that’s a big deal. So let’s break down what’s actually happening, and what it means for you.

Where we’ve been: search → website → lead

For the last decade the game was simple. Someone had a problem, they Googled it, they landed on your website, and — if the site did its job — they became a lead. Everything revolved around driving traffic to your site and converting it: keywords, rankings, contact forms, call buttons.

That still works today. But it’s quietly being replaced.

Where we are now: the AI-search era

People have stopped searching in keywords and started having conversations. Instead of typing “boiler repair near me,” they ask:

“My thermostat’s on and the fan’s running, but no hot water — what’s wrong?”

…often with a photo attached. They’re asking AI to diagnose the problem before they decide whether to call anyone. Google has leaned right into this: its search box now offers an “AI mode” that answers conversationally rather than handing you a list of blue links.

Here’s the important shift: your content is no longer competing to rank — it’s competing to be the source the AI trusts and quotes. That changes what a good website is for.

Where it’s going: AI agents that act for you

This is the part most businesses haven’t seen coming. The next step beyond AI answers is AI agents — personal assistants that don’t just tell you things, they do things. Research a job, compare options, check prices, and book it — all on your behalf, without you clicking through a single website.

And increasingly, agents will talk to other agents. Your customer’s assistant contacts a business’s assistant, sorts out availability and price between them, and comes back with “done — you’re booked for Tuesday.” No search, no website visit, no phone call.

When that’s how work gets booked, the winner isn’t the business with the prettiest website. It’s the business whose information is complete, trustworthy and machine-readable — the one the agents can actually understand and act on.

The three things every business should be doing now

The good news: you don’t need to predict the future perfectly. There are three concrete moves that pay off today and set you up for what’s coming — and they’re things GB3D already builds in.

1. Publish transparent pricing. People constantly ask AI “how much does this cost?” If your pricing isn’t anywhere online, AI has nothing to quote — so it recommends someone else. You don’t have to publish your exact price book; a clear pricing guide (typical ranges, what pushes the price up or down, what’s included) makes you the authority. That’s exactly what our new pricing page is for, and we build the same for clients.

2. Make it possible to book you online. “Agentic booking” is already here — people are starting to ask their assistant to schedule things, and the big booking platforms are racing to plug straight into AI tools. If a customer (or their agent) can’t transact with you online, you’re invisible to this whole channel. We build booking and instant-quote tools straight into your own website — like JobFlow and the ordering app we built — so the job can be booked without a single phone call. See more on our bespoke websites & apps page.

3. Turn real customer questions into content. Not AI slop — Google has openly said generic, “seven tips for summer” filler will hurt your brand. What wins is real, specific, useful answers to the actual questions your customers ask on the phone every day. Every enquiry you get is future content. Answer those questions publicly, and you’re training AI to trust you as the expert.

The bigger idea: your “knowledge catalog”

Here’s the concept that ties it all together. Today your website is the front end — a page waiting for Google to crawl it. Tomorrow, what matters is your knowledge catalog: a structured, verified dataset of everything your business knows — services, service areas, pricing, FAQs, policies, reviews, credentials — that AI systems can consume directly and deploy an agent from, on your behalf.

This is where GB3D genuinely puts you ahead, because we already build this in. Every site we build ships with:

  • a machine-readable llms.txt that tells AI tools exactly who you are and what you do,
  • structured data (JSON-LD) describing your business, services, FAQs and prices in the format Google and AI systems read,
  • transparent, structured pricing, and
  • a robots.txt that welcomes the AI crawlers (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and the rest) rather than blocking them.

In other words, your GB3D site isn’t just a brochure that sits there — it’s a knowledge catalog built to be read, cited and booked through.

Old internet vs new internet

  • What drives you traffic: was keywords, backlinks and rankings — now trusted, real content and clean data that AI can consume.
  • How customers find you: was search → website → lead — now they ask AI, AI answers using your knowledge, and an agent takes action.
  • Your core digital asset: was your website — now your knowledge catalog behind it.
  • The competitive edge: was the best-looking, highest-converting site — now the most complete, trustworthy data.

Why moving now matters

Most businesses have no idea this shift is underway — which is exactly why there’s a first-mover advantage. Build your knowledge catalog and your booking now, while the ground is still being laid, and you build up a reputation of trust with these AI platforms before your competitors even know the game has changed. And because it’s all on your own domain, with your own data, you own it — no one can switch it off or hold it to ransom (the same reason we argue for owning your software rather than renting it).

This isn’t science fiction, and it isn’t only for big brands. It’s a builder in Haywards Heath, a plumber in Burgess Hill, a firm in Crawley — being the one AI recommends when a customer (or their agent) goes looking.
